Tal y como cantaron los Bee Gees en Saturday Night Fever: “Deberías estar bailando” (en inglés: “You should be dancing”.) Cada vez más personas mayores descubren su John Travolta interior y llevan ese mensaje energizante a la pista. Los centros para personas mayores y otros centros de todo el país ofrecen clases de baile gratuitas o de bajo costo y, por supuesto, la serie de fiestas de baile en línea de Senior Planet los viernes.
Hay cada vez más pruebas de que bailar mejora la función cardiovascular, aumenta la fuerza central, mejora la memoria y la flexibilidad y mejora el estado de ánimo, pero ¿a qué se debe la creciente popularidad de la danza como un medio creativo para las personas mayores?
Bailar para establecer contactos
“La danza consiste en establecer contacto con los demás”, dice Naomi Goldberg Haas, de 63 años, directora artística de Dances for a Variable Population, una compañía de danza multigeneracional sin fines de lucro con sede en Nueva York que ofrece clases y espectáculos.
“Permite sacar a la luz un sinfín de emociones, ser comprendido en un nivel profundo. Bailamos porque sentimos y queremos expresar”.
“La danza sirve como un medio para compartir una gran cantidad de emociones, más claramente la ALEGRÍA”.
Creaciones de danza de coreógrafos mayores
Se invitó a coreógrafos mayores como George Faison, Ellen Graff, Stuart Hodes y Marni Thomas Hood a crear obras con bailarines de DVP. Sacarle partido a la alegría
Después de ver actuar a dos compañías de claqué diferentes en el Joyce Theater de la ciudad de Nueva York, SuZen, una fotógrafa artística y artista multimedia de 77 años, le dijo a una amiga que quería aprender a bailar claqué porque parecía divertido. En la parte posterior del cartel, vio un anuncio de la American Tap Dance Foundation, ubicada en su barrio de Greenwich Village. Se inscribió en una clase para principiantes absolutos y ahora toma clases semanales.
“¡Me encanta!” afirma ella. “En el pasado estudié tango, que es muy serio y necesita un compañero. Tap es divertido y alegre y no necesita pareja. Puedo ser espontánea y libre cuando bailo. Sin embargo tomar clases y aprender los pasos es riguroso y a veces muy difícil”.
Además de su clase semanal, SuZen practica algunas veces a la semana y ve tutoriales en internet.
“El claqué puede parecer sencillo, pero es bastante complejo”, añade. “Aprender los distintos pasos y luego las secuencias ha sido un desafío. Como persona mayor, encuentro que el baile tap es extremadamente bueno por varios motivos, como la memoria, recordar el paso y luego construir una secuencia a partir del paso y poder repetirlo. La otra cosa que es muy buena es poder mantener el equilibrio, especialmente cuando estoy parada sobre un pie mientras hago trazos varias veces con el otro pie.
“Al crecer con problemas de aprendizaje surgen todas mis inseguridades. Sin embargo, sé que esto es parte de la curva de aprendizaje y con perseverancia estoy mejorando. Me encanta y disfruto totalmente el claqué y planeo seguir aprendiendo”.
El baile como fisioterapia
Carolyn Davis, de 63 años, comenzó a bailar desde niña como forma de expresión, así como para aliviar la espasticidad, ya que padece parálisis cerebral espástica desde que nació. Tenía cinco o seis años cuando empezó a bailar como forma de ejercicio físico autodirigido.
“Bailar es vigorizante y relajante después de estar horas frente a la computadora”, dice Davis, escritora y editora que vive en Providence, Rhode Island y normalmente baila en silla de ruedas. “Me gusta la autoexpresión y la sensación de la música. Realizo una especie de estilo libre cada pocos días y uso música que expresa mi estado de ánimo”.
Davis baila en eventos públicos y organizó una fiesta de baile “virtual” desde su casa cuando Joe Biden y Kamala Harris asumieron el cargo de presidente y vicepresidente.
“El baile es beneficioso para la salud física y mental y se dice que previene la demencia”, afirma. “¡Lo recomiendo!”
